The saguaro (pronounced sa-WAR-o) cactus is the
most recognizable cactus around and was made famous
by the one and only Wile E. Coyote in the Warner
Brothers cartoons. When I first came to Arizona, I
searched for the perfect saguaro, only to find that
they are far from perfect. These magnificent cacti
are hundreds of years old when they are large
enough to have arms and over those years, they
endure fires, birds pecking holes in them for homes
and other assaults on their outer skin. They are
resistant to all of these forces and outlast most
other desert plants. I was able to visit Saguaro
National Monument in 1998 to get this image of a
group of saguaros on my 4 x 5 view camera as the
sun was setting over Tucson. --Rebecca |
