This image was made just minutes after one of the most traumatic experiences in my shooting career. We hiked to Halape Beach a day later than we had planned because Hurricane Jimena decided to blow through the day we were going to hike. When we got to the beach, it was still very windy, with gusts up to about 40MPH. I set up my camera for this shot and, while I was reaching for my light meter, I hear Keith yell and then the horrendous sound of wood hitting rock. The wind had blown over the tripod, and even though Keith dove to try and keep the camera from hitting the rocks, he only succeeded in cutting his knee. When the initial shock wore off and I inspected the camera, I was delighted to find that the only significant damage was a cracked base plate (which has no effect on light-tightness) and a missing small screw for the front tilt element (there are three). I was able to keep shooting for the rest of the trip, but I was a lot more aware of the tripod and wind! God was certainly looking out for me and my camera that day! --Rebecca |
