One of the best experiences I had in Hawaii was being able to get up close and personal with an active lava flow. The week we were there, the lava was fairly close to the parking area (about a mile and a half away). We went out at about 4:30 and when we first arrived, didn't see much. A ranger told us that as the sun goes down, the lava flows tend to get more active. This was certainly the case on this day. I have never been so hot in my life (and living in Phoenix, that is saying a lot!) standing next to that lava. When I was shooting this image, I had laid my hiking poles down about a foot from where I was standing. When I was done, I picked up the poles only to find that the basket of one of the poles had melted! The tips of my tripod were also melted and now have permanent black rock embedded in them. I consider that a great treasure from a wonderful adventure. I can't wait to go back! --Rebecca |
