Whenever we get the opportunity to travel back to
New England, I always pack up the camera equipment
because I know there are plenty of opportunities to
capture great images. We got that chance in July
2000 due to the wedding of good friends of ours
that still live in New England. After the wedding,
we made a trip north to the Flume in the White
Mountains of New Hampshire. I brought the RB67
medium format camera on the hike through the Flume
and set this shot up near one of the great
waterfalls off one of the trails. I set up quickly
(thank goodness I had the RB67 and not the 4 x 5)
and shot this one image when all of a sudden the
sun made an unexpected and unwelcome appearance.
The rock on the right side of the image was
brightly lit while the rest of the image was in
light to deep shadow. We waited, and waited, and
waited but it seemed the sun was just not going to
give up it's hold on that rock. I shot a couple
anyway, just to see what I would get, but I was
correct in believing the contrast would be too
great. Am I glad I got this one off right away!
